Connecting Your Device & Health App

Getting your fitness data into Goal Gauntlet requires a connection chain. Depending on your setup, this may involve up to three apps working together. This guide walks you through every step.

How It Works: The Connection Chain

Why three steps? Apple and Google act as central hubs for health data. Your device sends data to the health platform, and Goal Gauntlet reads from it. This protects your privacy - you control exactly what's shared.

Troubleshooting

Quick Fix Checklist

Try these in order before diving deeper:

  1. Is your health app showing data? Open Apple Health or Health Connect
  2. Is your wearable synced? Check device companion app
  3. Does Goal Gauntlet have permission? Check health app permissions
  4. Manual sync - Tap sync button on Leaderboard or Stats tab

"No Data" - Steps Not Appearing

iPhone:

  1. SettingsPrivacy & SecurityMotion & Fitness → Enable Fitness Tracking
  2. Health app → profile → AppsGoal Gauntlet → Enable all
  3. Check Screen Time isn't restricting Health access
  4. Verify steps exist in Health app → Browse → Activity → Steps

Android:

  1. Verify Health Connect is installed (Settings → search "Health Connect")
  2. Open Health ConnectData and accessSteps (if empty, your fitness app isn't syncing)
  3. Check Health ConnectApp permissionsGoal Gauntlet has read access
  4. Verify your wearable is paired in its companion app

Data Delayed or Stale

Data travels: Device → Device App → Health Platform → Goal Gauntlet. Each step has its own sync interval.

Fix:

  1. Open device app, force sync (pull to refresh)
  2. Wait 1-2 minutes
  3. Open Goal Gauntlet, tap sync button on Leaderboard or Stats
  4. Check battery saver isn't killing background sync

Steps Count Wrong

Undercounted: Phone not in pocket? Wearable charged? Data source conflict?

Overcounted: Multiple devices counting (phone + watch). Fix: Set priority in health platform data sources. Remove duplicate apps.

"Permission Denied" Error

iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Goal Gauntlet → Enable all. If not listed, reinstall app.

Android: Settings → Apps → Goal Gauntlet → Permissions. Also check Health Connect → App permissions → toggle off/on.

Wearable Not Syncing to Health Platform

DeviceFix
FitbitOpen app → pull to sync. Check Account → Health Connect (Android) or bridge app (iPhone)
GarminOpen Garmin Connect → sync. iPhone: Settings → Apple Health. Android: Check Health Sync bridge
SamsungOpen Samsung Health → verify watch data. Settings → Health Connect → verify sync on
Apple WatchSettings → Privacy → Motion & Fitness → enable. Watch app → Privacy → enable Fitness Tracking. Restart both devices. Last resort: unpair/re-pair

Health Connect Issues (Android)

ProblemSolution
"Health Connect unavailable"Android version too old (need 9+), or Health Connect not installed. Download from Play Store
"Health Connect needs update"Open Play Store → search "Health Connect" → Update
"Health Connect has stopped"Settings → Apps → Health Connect → Force Stop → Clear Cache → Reopen
Not in SettingsAndroid too old (need 9+). Download from Play Store
Permissions not stickingThis is a known Android issue. Goal Gauntlet verifies permissions by reading a small sample of data. If it fails, disconnect and reconnect in Settings → Health Data
Fitness app data not appearingToggle Health Connect sync off/on in fitness app. Check Health Connect → Data and access
Multiple apps conflictingConnect only ONE step source. Remove extras from Health Connect → App permissions
Can't open Health Connect settingsIn Goal Gauntlet, go to Settings → Health Data → Open Health Connect. This takes you directly to the Health Connect app

Still Not Working?

Common Questions

Q: Do I need a fitness tracker? A: No! Your phone tracks steps automatically. Keep it in your pocket.

Q: Why do I need up to 3 apps? A: Your device app talks to the health platform, and Goal Gauntlet reads from there. This is how Apple and Google designed health data sharing to protect privacy.

Q: Which setup is easiest? A: iPhone with Apple Watch. Everything is built-in with one-tap setup.

Q: My data is delayed. Why? A: Devices sync to their app first, then to the health platform. Allow 15-30 minutes. Use the sync button in Goal Gauntlet.

Q: Can I use multiple devices? A: Yes, but set priority in your health platform to avoid double-counting.

Q: What's the minimum Android version? A: Android 9. Android 14+ has Health Connect built-in.

Q: Can I manually enter steps? A: No. All data must come from your connected health app to ensure fair competition.
